New Hope Baptist Church feeds homeless on Christmas
DANBURY -- Volunteers began preparing food the night before for the homeless and people in need who came to the on Friday for a Christmas Day feast.
"I come here every year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an elderly man who lives at Crosby Manor. "I have no other place to go. I have no family and the only friends I have are the people who come here."
The Rev. founded the annual event in 1991 after she drove down Main Street and saw a homeless man eating out of the garbage can. Overcome with tears, she went straight to the church and asked the Rev. what she could do to help.
"Every year when I finish, I say I can't do it no more,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Bingham said. "But every time Christmas comes around and I have food on my table,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it breaks my heart and I have to do it again."
For years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the church has a worship service just for homeless people, but the Rev. though that was "dehumanizing" and opened the worship up to everyone. He also asked that all people coming to church that day or volunteering at the feast wear casual clothes instead of suits and dressed so everyone would feel comfortable.
On Christmas, Pitts was dressed in a black t-shirt, corduroys and black sneakers.
"The most frustrating part is seeing the same homeless people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the same faces,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on an annual basis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Pitts said. "And it's disheartening to see new faces. Plus, there's been a change in the kind of homeless people. In the past, it was primarily people with an emotional or mental disability. Now we see well-educated people who are truly down on their luck."
Danbury resident is a certified nurse's assistant and professional housekeeper, but since being evicted from her mobile home in October, she has been living out of her car. She attended the Christmas feast.
"The biggest blessing is I thought I was all alone and I'm not alone anymore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Martinez said.
The number of people who attend every year fluctuates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bingham said, but this year the crowd was bigger, probably because of the economy.
