Marathon is here to remain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Although a title sponsor has yet to be nailed down,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], entries happen to be arriving for next year's Dublin Marathon on Monday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], October 28.
"The race is definitely going ahead but not the same version as the past few years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says race director Jim Aughney.
With no race sponsor for this year's race,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the post-race party and TV coverage was scrapped. "We have to look at everything, for example prize money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], promotion abroad and also the Marathon Mission,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although it continues to be such a success,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Aughney.
Because of the Marathon Mission,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], standards are steadily improving in Irish long-distance running, with four women qualifying for the London Olympics and six men under A couple of hours 20 minutes.
In its 33-year history,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Dublin marathon has seen lean times. "In 1992, we'd no title sponsor and that we survived. Adidas then came in and gave us a huge boost,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Aughney who has been involved with the race since 1989 and as race director since 1997.
He's pleased the quantity of Irish runners within the race keeps growing. "We had 10,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 in this year's race which mostly is a result of the race series we started in 2002.
"People could manage 5 mile and were getting comfortable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. We persuaded them to try 10 miles and also the half marathon with a view to attempting a marathon annually later. It worked exactly as we predicted -- the number of Irish runners in the marathon went up in 2003 and has since went through roof."
Closing down the city of Dublin for any day doesn't come cheap using the Dublin Marathon not getting much take off in operational costs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"For the very first time since 2004,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we have increased the entry fee to which still compares well along with other big city marathons. That extra money is going to be something of an insurance policy."
Aughney and his team are still talking to potential sponsors, although it is getting late in the day for next year's race. "Whatever happens,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the race goes ahead. We just have to be more imaginative in how we use our resources." |
