Money wasn behind uniform choice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The all-black uniforms that Stanford wore Saturday night for the first time in 120 years of football were given to the school by Nike last season but were not part of a "marketing campaign or a profit-driven thing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," coach said Tuesday.
Newspapers in Virginia reported that wore black for its opening game against Boise State two weeks ago in part to promote Nike's Pro Combat series and that nine other schools had agreed to go black. Stanford didn't get any money from Nike to wear the uniforms "to my knowledge,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Harbaugh said.
He had declined to discuss the black uniforms after Stanford's 68-24 rout of Wake Forest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saying he preferred to talk about his team's performance. He said only that the idea of using the uniforms occurred to him as he was driving to work last week.
On Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said Nike offered the uniforms in 2008 and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when he asked the players about them this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they wanted to wear them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said. As for the fans' response,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "The only vote I'm concerned about is the players'."
Linebacker said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "I know there might have been some people who didn't like them. Personally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I loved them." They gave the team "a more aggressive look,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "The students and some of the recruits definitely loved them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I know that."
Some fans felt differently. Among the comments The Chronicle received were: "Please,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], never wear those horrid uniforms again - what were they thinking?" . "I thought I was seeing highlights of when I first tuned in." . "This is the best the Raiders have looked in years! Oh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wait ."
Another reader,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Gotta admit I was shocked to see the black uniforms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but if it adds to their mojo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then let them wear black."
Virginia Tech had said the black uniforms were a nod to its history. According to the school's website,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the uniforms "are in honor of the Corps of Cadets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an integral part of Virginia Tech's unique football culture and the university's enduring tradition since its earliest days as a full-time military school."
Some observers didn't buy that explanation. "Where there's money and TV,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there's no shame,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," New York Post columnist wrote recently. He said the black uniforms were a bow to "gang-wear."
Last year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mushnick pointed out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Florida State gave several explanations for wearing the black uniforms in a game before then-coach acknowledged that it was Nike's idea.
