OUTDOORS Walking trail in Derrada,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Four communities on the north shore of Clew Bay joined together five years ago to determine the 'Burrishoole loop walks'. Newport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Derradda, Tiernaur and Mulranny now have a number of looped walking trails to look after people of varying fitness levels. These trails bring the walker onto quiet bog roads and also to the best views that west Mayo has to offer.
Derradda is 2.5 miles from Newport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just from the Mulranny road. The old primary school, which now can serve as a community centre, may be the start point for the three Derradda loops, one of these is the 7k Lettermaghera loop (marked in green on the map). This loop is really a moderate-level walk - there are two short hills to climb, but they are worth it for the views.
Starting at the community centre follow the green arrows that show you along the way, after 1k you'll meet the new greenway that runs from Newport to Mulranny. Go over the Greenway and continue along the road past the old railway cottage. After this you walk through a place known as the wire hills,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], here you'll go by a number of small lakes and also the 'salmon leap',[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which separates both great lakes in the region, Feeagh and Furnace.
Turn left in the bridge and continue uphill with the village of Lettermaghera. Here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you'll start to gain height, and great views over Clew Bay will appear. The locals talk about the freshness of sea air that drifts in from the bay, and you can appreciate it while you head west across the high bog road.
The trail travels across the bog road for an additional kilometre before turning left and heading downhill towards Lough Fadda,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Just past the picnic bench you turn left and make the right path to the city centre.
You can also try the other two loops: Stick to the red arrows for an extended version from the Lettermaghera loop, or follow the blue arrows for a circuit of lough Furnace.

How to get there
Begin with Newport. Follow the N59 in direction of Mulranny for approximately 4km to reach a road junction on your right signposted Derradda Community Centre. Turn right check the information here road for 500 meters before you arrive at the Community Centre,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It comes with an information board in the middle which gives you information on all of the loop walks
