Each week, Marlen Garcia and Nicole Auerbach answer the questions that you've tweeted to us or e-mailed us. Six in a row,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including three road wins? Sounds like they're back on track to me, too. I think I said this earlier in the season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but you should never really count out Bo Ryan's squad. I know some teams won at the Kohl Center this season (which hardly ever happens) but it was early,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the team has recovered. A 7-3 record in the Big Ten this season is great.
Jordan Taylor's performances seem to have leveled out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too. He's scored at least 10 in every game since the Dec. 10 game vs. UNLV (season-low four points), and his 18 at Penn State on Tuesday certainly helped the Badgers. I'm not worried at all about Wisconsin. -- Nicole Auerbach
From Tim via e-mail: Everyone's down on Carolina, but isn't this just Roy Williams' standard regular-season protocol? If you're projecting down the line, isn't this team still a favorite for a No. 1 seed and a berth in New Orleans?
Many fans are trying to figure out what's wrong with North Carolina. The crispness and fluidity of that team's play at season's end in 2009 is still fresh in our minds. But even that team didn't become dominant until the final weeks of the season. So this team has time to become dominant, but I'm not as confident as I was a month ago. Right now I'd say UNC is a No. 2 seed. Kansas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Duke, Baylor, Kentucky,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Syracuse and Ohio State have more impressive tournament resumes in my mind. But this brings to mind the generous contracts many schools (probably the top 100) have with apparel companies.
I turned to my USA TODAY colleague Steve Berkowitz for information. He has researched and written stories about such contracts. I'm going to summarize what Steve shared with me: Basic outfitting agreements between apparel companies (such as Nike and Adidas) and schools usually cover uniforms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], practice gear and shoes. If the school needs more gear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they typically receive discounts to buy more. Bigger schools even get cash payments from companies. (See this link for a great 2006 story by The Roanoke Times about Virginia Tech's apparel deal).
Sometimes apparel company executives get tickets for regular-season football and Bowl games or basketball tournaments. That's worked into the contract.
"Deals can have crazy appendages to them," my colleague said. A Michigan deal with Nike had the apparel company funding a fellowship for the school, he told me.
Coaches sometimes receive a stipend from the companies to buy thousands of dollars worth of gear through the company (at wholesale pricing),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Sometimes the company will provide T-shirts for summer camps,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The perks go on and on.
A quick story: Several years ago, while working for the Chicago Tribune, I covered the Chicago Bulls for one season. When the Bulls played the Portland Trail Blazers in Oregon, players and others traveling with the team went to a nearby limited-access Nike store and received heavily discounted (and sometimes free) merchandise. You had to be on a pass list to get in the store. I heard stories about players stocking up like crazy. This was something offered to all NBA teams when they went to Portland,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ore. (Nike is based in Oregon). It made me laugh because those millionaire players don't need those discounts. But if they are willing to be walking billboards for the company - as the college teams are - that's worth a lot in advertising dollars. - Marlen Garcia
From Tim via e-mail: Can Missouri actually win the national title with so little size up front?
A: That lack of size will likely become a problem in the tournament, and so will having only seven scholarship players. So no,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I don't think Missouri can win the national title,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I can't see the Tigers reaching the Final Four. But it would be a terrific story if the Tigers defied the odds. Their senior leadership is outstanding. And the incredible accuracy of big man Ricardo Ratliffe (shooting 75% on field goals) sometimes is worth the work of two big men. - Marlen Garcia
From Tim via email: Great to see you mention Wyoming in the bubble watch. How many wins against the top-tier teams in the Mountain West (UNLV, SDSU, and New Mexico) do the Cowboys need down the stretch to go dancing?
Wyoming is a very interesting team. A pair of games vs. UNLV plus road games vs. New Mexico, Colorado State and San Diego State will decide the Cowboys' fate. It's hard to predict exactly how many wins they'll need because RPI is affected by other teams, too, but I'd say if they get at least two wins, let's re-evaluate and see how close to the field they'll be. -- Nicole Auerbach
