Paddy harvesting in'kaipad' fields begins,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Abdullakutty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], MLA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], formally inaugurating the event by joining farmers for cutting the crop from the tidal action-influenced fields that have been left fallow for the past 45 years.
The vast extent of the fields (fields under tidal influence) at Varam collectively known as Varam Vithu Kandam was under paddy cultivation after a gap of 45 years. The fields were unfit for paddy cultivation following the suspension of tidal action after the commissioning of the Kattampally irrigation project aimed at stopping salinity intrusion into the upstream of the river and its basins known as Kattampally fields,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], once famous for traditional rice and shrimp cultivation.
Paddy cultivation was revived in 30 hectare of fields there under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna with the assistance of the Fisheries Department for paddy and shrimp cultivation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The cultivation was done by six farmer groups having total 76 farmers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The vast expanse of land in the catchment area of the Kattampally river had been rendered unfit for paddy cultivation following the launching of the Kattampally project. Following demands of local farmers to allow tidal action upstream by opening the sluices built across the river,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the previous State government had constituted a panel of experts which recommended experimental opening of Kattampally project shutters for allowing tidal action.
