The Contract That Establishes The Premise For Apple’s Acquisition
ii)The Restricted Information may be used solely for the purpose of developing a 2D fingerprint sensor for Apple that is suitable for use in an Apple product.
It is very clear that Apple does not acquire hardware companies and then not deploy the technology, it will be deployed. It is very clear that Apple will have a mobile iWallet. Apple has learned a great deal from the experience it has with iTunes. In fact the iTunes payment experience is judged to be one of the best,Payment Processing: How does Apple do payments so well?. In my view Apple will do retail payments just [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] as well if not better.
AuthenTec also owns the foundational [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] technology patents of the fingerprint biometric industry consisting of nearly 200 issued and filed U.S. patents, as well as additional foreign patent derivatives. This includes patents covering fingerprint sensors and sensor packaging, software and end use. AuthenTec technology serves as a strong foundation for the Company’s smart sensors, identity management software and embedded [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] security.
The AES850 can be reworked to look exactly like the iPhone home button. This seems to be a very likely turn of events at this point. The AES850 can be placed on a switch to allow for a push button effect, however I am rather certain that Apple will use the touch of the sensor as a virtual push button effect.
The company has been working with a number of partners to make a complete NFC with fingerprint biometrics, wallet systems. Apparently including Apple, here is part of a public document filed by AuthenTec yesterday [3]:
i)The receiving party will limit disclosure of the Restricted Information to the individuals approved in writing in advance by the disclosing party. The receiving party may not disclose the Restricted Information to any other of its personnel, consultants or subcontractors without the disclosing party’s prior written approval.
The AES850 [2] may be one of the reasons Apple is so interested in AuthenTec. It is the worlds smallest fingerprint scanner in production and has one of the highest accuracies.
The AuthenTec AES850 fingerprint scanner, or a version of it (perhaps round), will be the future iPhone Home Button.
Fingerprint Readers And Patents
This Apple acquisition is not really just about security, it is also about NFC, Mobile Wallets, Payments, new ways to pay and a new iPhone Home Button.
Image from the 2008 Apple patent 20100082444 showing NFC Logo and fingerprint scanner (using the older AuthenTec thin rectangular finger print scanner AES2750). I believe the actual fingerprint scanner will be the Home Button using another [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] AuthenTec product.
….
AuthenTec ( was founded in 1998 and is shipping over 100 million fingerprint scanners per year. AuthenTec has created encryption technology, fingerprint sensors and identity management software that is in use on mobile device, networking and computing companies, content and service providers, and governments.
AuthenTec has created some of the best finger print sensors in the industry. They have also focused on making the components small enough and light on power consumption. They have very well designed support software for the components that allow for easy integration to almost any type of application.
This Is The Story Of A New iPhone Home Button
Meet The Future iPhone Home Button: A Fingerprint Scanner
This Development Agreement No. C56-12-00323 (the “Agreement”) is made effective as of July 26, 2012 (“Effective Date”), by and between Apple Inc., a California corporation having its principal place of business at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California 95014, United States (“Apple”), and AuthenTec, Inc., having its principal place of business at 100 Rialto Place, Suite 100, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Melbourne, Florida 32901, United States (“Company”).
Certain information to be shared by either party may include confidential information that is highly confidential (“Restricted Information”). If a party labels any confidential information as “Restricted Information,” in addition to the confidentiality obligations of the Nondisclosure Agreement, the other party will implement the following procedures with respect to the Restricted Information:
The image above says it all. Make note of the NFC Logo at the top and the Fingerprint Sensor at the bottom highlighted in red. This is from patent application 20100082444 from September 30, 2008 [1]. In this patent Apple speaks a great deal about biometrics and more directly fingerprint scanner built into the face of the illustrated iPhone (#45).
The Past And The Future Of Fingerprint [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Scanners
Under this Apple vision, the iWallet [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] will take the features of Passbook and combine it with NFC, Optical, geo location and Cloud based transaction systems in development by Apple. To use the system the iWallet user just places their finger over the Home button at the appropriate time when they want to enter into a transaction. In the basic system, the merchant will just need to add a <$150 NFC reader. NFC and EMV readers will just about be required by 2015. In more advanced use cases the merchant could use Apple’s POS system on an iPad and participate in a geo location based transaction environment.
This rare Apple acquisition of a hardware company is not a surprise to anyone reading my insights about Apple, Wallets and Payments here on Quora. In fact companies that choose to work with me directly in this space have known about this and other directions Apple will take Payments and Wallets. There are a number of rather remarkable surprises [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] ahead. Some will create the landmark developer opportunity like passbook (Passbook (iOS app): How will Apple’s new mobile wallet Passbook impact other mobile [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] wallets?) and some will render startups and business plans redundant and irrelevant.
Abstract:
Apple has been slowly and methodically assembling the parts for a mobile Wallet system, and thus far we have only see the very basic [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] part of this system in Passbook. I spoke to this here Passbook (iOS app): How will Apple’s new mobile wallet Passbook impact other mobile wallets?.
Using fingerprint scanners as a way to confirm identity has been around for quite a long time. Linking the idea to payments has also been around for quite a while. Forgotten by many, PayByTouch [4] was garnering the highest valuation of any payment company, at the time, using cutting edge technology (who does not leave the house without their finger?). The company were the media darlings of the moment looking for higher and higher valuations based on the “disruption” this new system would cause the payment industry. At its peak, there were over one a million merchants and millions of users. The company failed in a spectacular way. There are quite a few reasons for the failure but one of them was forcing too much change on the merchant’s existing relationships and procedures.
One of my favorite quotes seem to apply here:
I do not predict this fate for Apple in the least. The direction they are taking in payments and mobile wallets is supremely brilliant. They have choose to work with rather then against all parts of the payment system infrastructure. This is the epitome of long term success in payments. By not requiring merchants to change providers and not requiring consumers to sign up to a new payment scheme, Apple has positioned itself for the highest possible level of success.
The AES850 will likely become an integral part of Apple’s mobile iWallet system. By allowing an effortless way to confirm transactions Apple is truly bringing innovation to the mobile wallet. Security and confidence has been one of the largest failure points in the minds of the average consumer.

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” -Richard Buckminster Fuller, 1947
NFC + [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Fingerprint Scanner = Apple iWallet
The new fingerprint scanner/home button [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] will serve far more applications then the iWallet and Instant unlock for Apple. It will become the center piece for authentication, login and password management. With one change, Apple will truly shift the paradigm in a very meaningful way. After the future iPhone is released few of us will remember what it was like before this new technology.
