NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 03: Nike debuts new NFL uniforms on April 3,.
As Nike's takeover of the NFL's apparel approached this week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the prospect of turning on a 49ers game and seeing a bunch of burgundy ninja costumes seemed both greater,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and bleaker, than ever.
The designs were revealed Tuesday, and only one of them, as it turned out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was really new. The fashion-forward team? Could it be that it is in closest proximity to Nike's Oregon headquarters?
Most of the teams accepted a change in the fabric and cut of the uniforms, which apparently are lighter weight with reduced drag. But the overall effect is pretty conservative for a company that has helped turn college football into the male auxiliary of "Project Runway."
The teams themselves decide whether to become fashion-forward and remain instantly identifiable to their longtime fans. The Raiders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not surprisingly, made no changes. The 49ers, who had just tweaked their design toward a more traditional look in 2009, accepted the new fabric and tailoring.
The allure of extra cash, produced whenever fans must update their team-based wardrobes, might persuade some of the stodgier teams to redesign in the future. Because fans tend not to buy pants,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the sales factor might not push either the 49ers or Raiders in the unfortunate direction of same-color pants and jerseys. To be fair,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the NFL teams that do use this color scheme don't really look like ninjas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], merely overgrown kids in ninja pajamas.
Some fans were hoping the changeover would inspire a return to traditional looks. The Eagles used to have a distinctive logo, with a pair of outstretched wings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet they replaced it 16 years ago with a blocky drawing of a bird's head. It looks very much like the Seahawks' logo, and the teams' colors look almost identical, even though Seattle wears "blue" and the Eagles green.
One team did add a very subtle reference to its past. Carolina, according to the Charlotte Observer, has the words "Keep Pounding" inscribed inside the back collar of every uniform, in honor of a locker-room speech once given by , the linebacker and assistant coach who died of cancer seven years ago. |
