LOS ANGELES - What's scarier than a ghost inside your attic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? Built to be out-of-focus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Found footage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the jouncy, documentary-like style of filmmaking that's get to be the hottest device in horror since gore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], returns with a shaky vengeance Friday in Paranormal Activity 4,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the latest in a franchise that has become the reigning king of fright films.
And when the previous three installments are any suggestion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this area office results could be scary.
Despite entering its fourth low-budget incarnation (the first film, in 2009, cost $15,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Paranormal shows no sign of normalizing at theaters: Last year's third installment grossed $105 million,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a significant leap in the $85 million gross of Paranormal Activity 2 this year.
Analysts expect a debut with a minimum of $35 million for that new entry of the series,http://www.pcplhlpc.fora.pl/being-killed-eyes-like-our-choice-what-is-lsd-made-from-traffic-jam-fun-facts-about-cocaine-tonight,1/types-of-onesies-for-adults-spun1,4804.html#4812,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which they say has changed the way Hollywood views horror. While distributor Paramount Pictures has not released the production budget for Paranormal 4,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no film within the series has are more expensive than $5 million (Paranormal 3). Still,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the franchise averages $99 million per movie domestically,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], based on Box Office Mojo.
"It's true guerilla filmmaking," says Jeff Bock,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chief analyst for box-office trackers Exhibitor Relations. "Paranormal Activity makes it tough for any studio to rationalize spending more than $20 million for a movie."
Because found-footage movies depend on consumer-grade cameras and no-star casts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "there's a creepiness to it that audiences are loving,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Bock says. "The amateur video element causes it to be want to could happen to anyone. It's reality TV for the movies. I don't think we're even close to the saturation point yet" for stories told with the lenses of smartphones, Super 8 cameras and laptop webcams.
Indeed, the genre is hotter than a new iPhone. Last week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the $3 million Ethan Hawke horror film Sinister opened to $18 million.
Recognizable actors aren't the only real ones joining the jouncy fray. Barry Levinson directs Nov. 2's The Bay, a found-footage thriller in regards to a small Maryland town caught in the center of an ecological disaster.
Paranormal 4 directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who also directed the prior chapter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], say the success of the franchise and genre still surprises them. Paranormal continues the saga of the mysterious Katie (Katie Featherston),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a troubled mother who literally can't shake her demons.
"The success of the third film wasn't anticipated at all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Joost says. "Normally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there's a drop-off within the third film (at the box office). But if the scares feel authentic, the audience will still get on that ride."
To create the ride as rickety as you possibly can,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Joost and Schulman walked around through homes that would function as sets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], looking for something that could creep out moviegoers.
"You walk around the house,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having fun with things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], talking out what would provide you with that chill in the middle of the night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Schulman says. "Sometimes the scariest feeling is the fact that simple chill that someone is incorporated in the house."
The directors bought cameras off electronics-store shelves and washed out some scenes to provide them an unpolished look. "It's an exciting time for found footage. There are still a lot of avenues to become explored,http://www.nifedipinerbzzp.fora.pl/most-often-metformin-hci-1000-mg-augmentin-generic-equipment,1/prepare-in-advance-to-ensure-time-at-the-airport-i,4549.html#4629,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially in non-horror,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Joost says. "And it's cheap enough to become accessible for almost anyone."
Good found-footage horror,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Joost says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], follows simple principles:
Forget cinematography. Cameras can jump and story lines can jumble in found-footage movies. "Don't save money on video equipment than your character would,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he says. "It needs to look homemade."Cut your makeup budget. "Make sure the boy's locks are chaos and also the actress doesn't have on makeup,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Joost says. "Pimples are good. Nothing takes you out of a film like visiting a character wake up who doesn't look bad."
And don't let found-footage movies' basement production values belie their power,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bock says.
"Paranormal may be the franchise that wiped out Jigsaw,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the recurring villain in the graphically violent Saw franchise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which spawned seven films. "Until they are available track of something scarier than the usual noise in your bathroom,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I do not think we'll begin to see the popularity dying off soon."
