I understand I can't expect much for the cheap price, but I don't require any fancy settings, only the manual options. Whenever I have searched forums and websites online for cheap flashes with manual controls etc I've found plenty of good priced flashes which are equivalent to the speedlites for cheaper,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but these are to be used on camera with metering etc and are therefore still much more expensive than I am looking for. What I want is really a cheap flash with manual controls, that could be decades old so long as it still works, without necessity for fancy metering because it is just going to be used like a portable source of light instead of a 'speedlite' equivalent.
Any help would be appreciated finding good brands and their models to maintain an eye out for on ebay etc.
You mention used, and I commend that choice, however I believe most importantly there are several at-least-relatively quite inexpensive (though perhaps over £30-40; I'm not sure the exchange rates off hand).
The first is the Vivitar 285HV (or I suppose now fundamental essentials Cactus KF36) (or perhaps an old higher-voltage 285 or 283,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and maybe other models,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], used - though I am not certain those have adjustable manual modes), though be aware that for whatever reason this flash skips 1/8 power - it simply has 1/16, 1/4, 1/2, and full ("M") power.
There's also the Yong Nuo YN460, which is the cheapest full manual flash I understand of this you can purchase new - for as little as US$50 or so,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], supposedly. I do not have one of these, and haven't shot with one, but I've had one out of my hands and used the interface - i had to spend a minute to figure out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but seemed pretty straightforward after that.
Much more info (and links to flickr discussion threads) on of these (and a third, sounds-a-lot-better-but-a-bit-more-expensive option -- the LumoPro LP120 -- which I have yet to actually have my hands on personally, and so i won't say anymore about) are on a strobist post about cheap flashes.
When it comes to used market, I've used a classic SunPak flash that worked decently (they also have the PZ42X, for you to look for used,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if it is cost is simply too top note that I haven't used that one either). Or some of numerous options from numerous brands, I'm certain. (The Nikon SB-24 and 26 were made very popular through the Strobist blogs about them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which had the down-side (in the buyer's perspective) of raising what they tended to sell for).
I've also picked several old flashes up from thrift stores and yard sales and the like, most of which were as little as $1 (or even given to me), had a fixed output mode (which sort of counts as manual, right?),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and serve some purposes nicely (I have built to be tiny (it requires 2 AAA batteries) and has an optical slave which I sometimes like to tuck into a corner somewhere,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for example).
