Trade Unionists march from Salford to Manchester city centre to mark international workers day
Trade Unionists marked the bank holiday with a traditional march from historic Bexley Square,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in Salford, to Manchester city centre in honour of international workers day.
Salford's new mayor, Ian Stewart - elected by the city last week - addressed crowds at the beginning of the event,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], organised by Manchester Trades Union Council.
The procession of public sector workers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], many carrying union placards,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then battled the rain to create its way down New Bailey Street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bridge Street, Deansgate, and Victoria Street to Cathedral Gardens in Manchester.
Worker Mark Wiseman talks at the rally
The scenes are replicated each year in more than 80 countries that mark the international celebration of workers' rights which often takes put on May 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Ian Stewart said afterwards: "I believe the trade unions could be a force permanently and that i wish to form a partnership approach with trade unions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], employers, further and higher education and then any other organisations who can allow us to approach the federal government to ensure that we are able to explain that the cuts have gone too quickly, way too hard and too deep and that's hurting Salford people and families unnecessarily."
He explained it had been particularly poignant the rally had taken place on the website of the Battle of Bexley Square where demonstrating workers were set upon by police during a protest in 1931,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Environment Agency worker Mark Wiseman, 53, an associate of trade union Unison,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who joined yesterday's march,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said: "I'm very concerned about the effects of privatisation and contracting out and also the impact this will have on workers' conditions.
"In the aftermath of the Second World War we had the NHS created within Manchester and when the nation can rebuild its economy, its NHS, its rail system when it is totally shattered by war then just what shall we be doing here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when things are more prosperous,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when we can't provide good public services for people?"
Mark Chilcott,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 50,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a back office manager for Greater Manchester Police,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], also in the rally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said: "It's the savageness from the cuts that have come through previously 2 yrs which have really appalled me. When the current government came in the back office staff became a simple target and thus many sections of society have been treated like that."
also it attitudes like yours that are slowly using this countries employment conditions to the Victorian times. People DIED to obtain what rights and protection employees have today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet we all just appear to relax and watch them taken away. Whether it hadn been for unions kids could possibly be still working down mines or more chimneys or sewing shoes and clothes in sweat shops. School education wouldn't be free and open for all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we wouldn possess a health service. First and foremost,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we the folks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wouldn have the vote!
The fact that Mr Stewart (sorry, not being disrespectful to his office,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just not sure of his proper mayoral title) must state " believe the trade unions can be a force for good" speaks volumes as to how low trade unionism has sunk in the public regard. Not so long ago, that will not have been a controversial statement. Unions were once seen as backing good causes and standing up for fair play. Now however they rightfully recognised by many as nasty, workshy blackmailers with their snouts in the trough.
Mr Stewart, some questions which might give us clues regarding your integrity:
When speaking in favour of your party union paymasters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], would it not be right and proper to report that your party is in their pay? (I just been watching HIGNFY,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and even Clarkson had the decency to declare he was paid by Murdoch)
When criticising the cuts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wouldn't it be right and proper to first admit that it was you party incompetent fiscal management which made them necessary, and do you not feel a deep sense of shame for that hardship caused by the mess your party created?
OK,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rhetorical questions The truth is that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but just calling a shameless,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hypocritical slimeball would have been a cheap shot.
In older days the march was about worker rights, now we have seen public service workers with unrealistic expectations bemoaning how terrible it's that their cushy number isn as cushy because it used to be,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], funny but you never hear them showing any gratitude for how much better off they are than workers in the private sector.
Going back only 50 years or less we'd almost full employment, companies found it hard to recruit workers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and immigration was seen as an solution, but trade unions hijacked by members of the far left encouraged workers to become on strike a lot more than these were in work. Eventually obviously they destroyed the industries they worked in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as their members jobs. Obviously it wasn their fault - it never is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so that they find others who have to sort out their mess,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so we begin to see the unrealistic marching again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with leaflets printed by the socialist workers party. Will we see any kind of admission that there even is really a defecit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not to mention one rung up by their Liebour party friends? Of course not,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that might be to acknowledge reality,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which would not do!
