Slacking Off on Christmas
Last Christmas, I was the perfectionista. I wrote out Christmas cards, baked cookies, got everyone the perfect gift and didn't forget anyone. I was also exhausted, dissatisfied and deeply in debt after it was all over.
This Christmas, I said to hell with it. I wrote out not one card and barely shopped. Tonight, I felt guilted into baking, but these cookies aren't from scratch. It's Toll House this Christmas. I'm not baking from scratch.
The news that my mother-in-law will be staying the night Christmas Eve threw me into a mild panic. I pulled the wreath from the summer (silk hydrangeas and magnolias) off the door and tossed up a fresh Balsam fir wreath. There's a garden center down the road that does a good job of putting together wreaths. If MIL is coming, I have to make it a little more Christmassy around here. I resolved not to decorate this year because I've been ill and I didn't want to be responsible for pulling everything out and putting it back again. But the threat of company forced me to decorate against my will. I'm not happy about it.

After years of selecting and sending the best and most tasteful Christmas cards, this year we've received but a trickle of cards for all the previous years' efforts. I felt like a real slug for a minute after seeing that a man had the time and proper upbringing to sit down and write out cards. But that's okay. I deserve a break.

Yesterday, my husband and I braved the mall. I still had shopping to do for the young'un. Can't completely slack off when you have young'uns. They expect something under the tree.
Flamingoes are so Christmassy
The mall is a horrible place to go in general and it only gets worse with the pressure of Christmas added. We went to Macy's and wandered around, searching for appropriate gifts but soon realized how overpriced and ridiculous everything was. Upon walking in, we noticed the perfume counter. One perfume was named "Unforgivable Woman". I had to wonder if it had a cologne counterpart named "Irresponsible Man". Who names this crap? What does an unforgivable woman smell like? Some other guy? Beer and pork rinds? Then there was another perfume called Jessica Simpson's "Fancy" with a picture of her loafing around in bed. Who wants to smell like some twit's "fancy". Sounds dirty if you ask me.
My husband finally asked if I wanted to go look at dicks. I got all excited but then he said he meant Dick's Sporting Goods. I figured they must have some nice things over there for my son to use when he goes camping. He does need some nice clothes. He's at the age where it's cool to freeze your ass. While we were at Dick's, my husband wanted my to try on some new sneakers because my other ones are three years old and my feet hurt. I like to have nice shoes.
