School Count Day: Incentives or bribes?
Head Count Day for public schools determines the dollars and cents a school district will receive from the state. The more students in school on a designated day(s),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the more money given to the district.
School districts are coming up with incentives to encourage students to come to school on Count Day. Not having enough students in class on Count Day will result in lost dollars for the district,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Count Day for the Detroit Public Schools is Oct. 3, 2012.
Bob's Classic Kicks, a Detroit sneaker boutique,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], launched "Kicks for Count Day" campaign. Bob's Classic Kicks will be giving a free pair of Nikes to any Detroit Public School student who attends school on Count Day. The student will obtain a voucher from his or her school indicating that they attended school on Count Day and take the voucher to Bob's . However, giving a student a chance does. Chances are likely that the student will return, and the odds are in favor of some adults never learning. As an educator, I maintain that exclusion and labeling is contrary to progressive education.
Detroit schools offering bribes you say? Nike shoes may be a big deal for some on Count Day; however, what about The Denver Post reporting that some schools in Colorado "offer bribes to ensure kids make it to school for the head count" (Griego, 2011). "A lot of effort goes into getting students there just for that one day," one Denver principal told the Post (2011).
Similarly, the Dallas Independent School District is giving out $1,500 worth of prepaid debit cards in a drawing for all students who attend the first day of school! The DeSoto Independent School District in Texas will be holding drawings for free iPods to students who arrive at school on time for the first five days of school for fall 2012 (Tottle, 2012).
Spring 2012 eight students in the DallasFort Worth district were given free cars as a reward for perfect attendance and excellent academic performance. Students also received gift cards and electronics. "Every year we've done this we've seen an increase in attendance and in perfect attendance," one high school principal told the Fort Worth Telegram (2012/06/0Cool. "Obviously, if a kid is not in school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they're not going to learn. We try to get them to see the value of coming to school."
Winter 2012, a Cincinnati high school handed out Visa gift cards to students who showed up on time, attended all classes, and stayed out of trouble. Seniors received $25.00 cards and underclass students received $10.00 or $5.00 cards.
What are campaign gifts? What are incentives given to city officials? What is included in scholarship packages awarded to excellent athletes lured to attend a certain university? Are not holiday bonuses given for good work? What about five dollars for every 'A' grade given on a report card? There are some very big retirement bonuses being extended to great employees.
We reward our students some nominal fee or tokenism for going to school, yet we support legislation that cuts schools' spending and increases the defense spending in America. Our society is more viral than ever before. Students our studentscan look on the Internet, the television, or any other social media and see what a materialistic society we are. We have shown our children what is of value, and education does not make the list. Our children learn from us, very early, what we value.
Years ago schools were not in the incentive business for students. Likewise, years ago corporal punishment was par for the course and iPods, video games, and other electronic distractions had not taken over. Homework was completed without the interruptions of a cell phone. Moreover, divergent views in schools resulted in the demise of prayer in schools and children feel the anxiety of walking down the block.
Neighbors use to be the watchful eye for school children, now neighbors may be the reason for the watchful eye. Years ago there were schools open on almost every other city block in the City of Detroit, but hard economic times and joblessness caused many school closings. as the National Anthem blared in the background. Today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], over thousands of channels and never ending programing opens the door for the heart's desires.
The youngster who comes to school on Count Day to get a voucher for a new pair of Nikes will be exposed to educators and other professionals, who will be given, maybe just one chance to captivate the student. Being prepared for that one chance sounds better than formulating an argument to relinquish any opportunity for a successful encounter.
The beauty of school is the serendipitous nature of it. Educators expect one thing and our students can amaze us with another. Each student is different; therefore each student's motivation is different. Learning for the sake of knowledge is still the backbone of education, and teachers are the pundits for the job. The incentives may come and they may go,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but schools are still in the business of teaching, by any means necessary.
Thank you for the incentives because schools today are fighting for the minds of students against an electronic age with global ramifications.
