Data fails to boost US stocks as Wal

Gold lost 1.6 per cent, to settle at $US1608.80 a troy ounce. The US dollar slipped against the euro but rose versus the yen. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.009 per cent as prices fell.
In corporate news, Herbalife tacked on 1.2 per cent on news that activist investor Carl Icahn had acquired a roughly 13 per cent stake in the nutritional-supplement maker and plans to discuss strategic alternatives with the company.
VF, the maker of North Face fleece jackets and Vans sneakers, climbed 3.3 per cent after reporting better-than-expected quarterly earnings.
MeadWestvaco jumped 13 per cent after financier Nelson Peltz's Trian Fund Management reported a stake in the packaging company.
Agilent Technologies slipped 5.2 per cent after the testing-equipment maker reported quarterly earnings that missed expectations and forecast earnings and revenue for the current period that fell short of analysts' views,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
LogMeIn tumbled 30 per cent after the information-technology company gave a first-quarter earnings projection that missed analysts' estimates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
