70 year old marathoner goes the distance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The annual Mississauga Marathon is becoming a multi-million dollar business,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Just about every participant poised at the starting line on Mother's Day, will have a cause close to his or her heart, for which they will be collecting money.
The soon to be 70-year-old started running six years ago at a time when common aches and pains catch up with common sense resulting in even the most avid of fitness fanatics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], slowing down.
Wordham's first foray into running was the 5k Run For The Cure race in Toronto,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Collecting $1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 in donations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Wordham matched the amount and donated $2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 to breast cancer research.
Since then, Wordham has added to the distance, completing both the inaugural and second annual Mississauga half marathons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as the Cover Bridge half marathon in Vermont.
Wordham would have participated in last year's third annual Mississauga event,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he did have a valid excuse.
"Last year I was in China running up the wall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said in jest. "Actually, I didn't run it, but I walked a lot of it."
Instead of lugging around a camera on his travels, Wordham instead laces up his sneakers.
"It's a good way to get fit," said Wordham,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who ran through parts of Portugal, Spain and Gibraltar last year.
"When you run around on the streets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you see lots of things you've never seen before."
Now semi-retired, after owning and operating a copper and brass strip mill, which supplies much of Canada, Wordham expanded the company to the degree it now ships to 46 countries around the world.
Wordham has now recruited many of his business associates and friends and made them members of his own Hacksaw Crusaders club.
Hacksaw, as he was nicknamed during his rugby playing days in England, as a member of the Wasps, hopes to raise $100,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 this year for breast cancer research.
During the calendar year, Wordham will accept donations for completing four events, including the Mississauga half marathon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Vermont race,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the New York half marathon and the 5k Run For The Cure.
Wordham, who has been active much of his life in rugby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sailing, skiing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and hiking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says he would be running even if he didn't have a cause to run for.
"I enjoy the fresh air, regardless of what the weather is like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "I get to see the neighborhood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], listen to the birds, the wind - I usually run by myself.
"But, I also believe you should do good things for your community. More of us should do whatever we can."
Members of the Hacksaw Crusaders will be provided special T-Shirts and join Wordham at the starting line of the Run For The Cure race. They will also be invited to a Keg and barbecue at Wordham's house, along with other social events.
