EU agrees to support Polish natural gas overhaul
BRUSSELS, Oct. 16 () -- The European Commission said Wednesday it would help Poland update its energy sector and develop new natural gas pipelines. The Commission said Wednesday a support package of $629 million for the Polish energy sector was in line with aid rules set by the European Union."The Commission has concluded that the project will further EU energy goals without unduly distorting competition in the internal market," it said in a statement.Poland next year plans to build a liquefied natural gas terminal and has development plans in place to examine the shale natural gas potential. The European Commission said it supported plans in Poland for a so-called North-South corridor, gucci belt men, which would link the Polish gas market to Scandinavian and Central European markets. The European aid will be granted to Poland's state-owned gas company Gaz-System.The Polish government this year expressed reservations about hosting a section of the Yamal-Europe natural gas pipeline. The Polish and Russian governments agreed on the project in the 1990s but Warsaw said the situation changed because of its closer ties to the EU. |
