The laundry has come out of the closet and into a room of its own with a more efficient use of space to make washing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], drying and ironing a breeze.
But the perfect laundry isn't the exclusive domain of a big home: think intelligent designs and clever colour combinations for a laundry that works,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Hickinbotham design director Ruth Vagnarelli says laundries are now multi purpose rooms with a designer focus. "Laundries are bigger than before and the space is used more efficiently," she says.
"People are installing inset sinks in the benchtops,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], overhead cupboards with a rail to hang shirts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they prefer to tuck front loader washing machines and driers neatly below the benchtop side by side.
"The laundries in the Hickinbotham and Statesman Homes have the option of a broom cupboard and a pull out laundry bin and hamper, so messy baskets and floors strewn with clothes are a thing of the past.
"Some clients are also installing fold out ironing boards and built in bar fridges, as well."
And while it's a utility room,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], don't scrimp on style, Ruth adds. "Laundries have become more designer and clients are continuing colour schemes and often have different coloured overhead cupboards to the remaining joinery."
Michael Farquhar from KT3 says the drying rail has been around for the past 10 years, but it's now catching on as part of the trend for integration.
"It's great for letting things drip dry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it's good to co ordinate with a pull out ironing board integration is key for the ultimate laundry."
And because he says the laundry is like an indoor shed, keep things tidy with lots of cupboard space go right up to the ceiling for items such as sports gear.

Don't forget about the tiniest of laundries needed for apartments or small flats. Or because you'd rather dedicate space to living! Tania Nikolitsis from Harvey Norman Renovations 8132 8000 designed this laundry to fit simply into a cupboard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Laundries don't have to be big, particularly when space is limited. This client didn't need a separate room,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he didn't even want a laundry trough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so we integrated it into the kitchen," Tania says.
In the design featured here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], glossy 2 pac doors in Dulux Claret Red mimic the cricket ball red leather sofa and contrast with the stainless steel clad kitchen cupboards. Clever!

Tips to maximise the space in your laundry
* Choose lighter tones for overhead cupboards to keep the space bright and open. Darker colours up top tend to make a space feel smaller.
* Think about not just cleaning your clothes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but also sorting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ironing and folding. This means maximum benchspace,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hanging space and built in ironing boards and clothes baskets for both dirty and ready to iron items.
* Work out the right flooring for your laundry's many guises. If a high traffic area between indoors and out and used for storing shoes and boots, your under foot choice will need to not only be waterproof but also durable.
* Consider slatted shelving, which is a fantastic idea for airing items. And a ceiling airer think fold down or fixed is a fantastic, energy free option for drying clothes.
* Make your laundry multipurpose by positioning it near the kitchen and incorporating into the design an extra fridge and storage space/benchspace for entertaining and food preparation.
* Think practical: use baskets on the benchtop for those everyday items; a large sink for cleaning muddy hands or the dog; deep, open shelving so anything can be found at a glance; and plenty of floor space so it's easy to move about.
