We are a suburban school district just outside of Rochester,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], NY. Our district currently has a half day kindergarten program. By all accounts are scores at all levels are well above average. The district was recent recognized for having one of the top high schools in the country. Over the past year we have been seriously looking at full day kindergarten programs. Adopting full day kindergarten would necessitate a building expansion project. Most recently we visited a very successful program in the area. Clearly a full day program would allow greater time for socialization,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], play and more in depth time for language arts and math. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after extensive research online it is difficult to find hard data that says full day kindergarten makes a substantial difference in children academic performance by the time they reach third grade. Most of the reports on full day kindergarten are based heavily on urban areas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where there is clear evidence that full day kindergarten prepares students to do school better. A reduction in discipline issues and a bounce up in language arts skills that disappear by third grade. Anyone out there with full day kindergarten in a suburban setting we would like to know about your experiences.
Excited about the kindergarten portfolio project at Council Rock Primary School. Our 2020 Vision recognizes that this group of students will graduate from high school in the year 2020. They are one of our many trailblazers as we retool for the 21st century. The kindergarten teachers and their principal held extensive discussions on what pieces of work would reflect a students kindergarten experience. The goal being to capture the work digitally and make it meaningful to teachers in subsequent years. For our pilot year eight pieces of work will be collected. The final product will be published as well as stored digitally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hopefully building to a compendium of work over 12 school years. As the students move through the system they will eventually help to manage their portfolios. Goals for the future include capturing reading fluency and discussions digitally.
