Mike Tyson is supposedly grotesque. A monster, they call him. He rapes women and eats people, and partakes of drugs and whores. All this is true,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but there is apparently another Mike Tyson, an anxious guy who needs his friends.
Over the past week, and only days before Saturday night's heavyweight championship fight against Lennox Lewis, this Tyson has apparently been nervously dialling around the world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], asking people to join him in Memphis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tennessee.
Among those who got a call was Jeff Fenech, who spoke to Tyson on Sunday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], boarded a plane for the United States on Monday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and yesterday could be seen wearing a heavily studded crucifix over a boldly colored T-shirt, in the wings behind the fighter.
"He called me in Sydney and said, 'Can you come?' " said Fenech. The Australian had already said no,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because he had a commitment to fighters of his own. But then Tyson called again.
"He said he wants his friends around," Fenech said. "We've been friends a long time. He's just looking for support."
Tyson's behaviour this week has been very peculiar (although not, one concedes, as peculiar as biting people). In Hawaii, he was spotted jogging along the beachfront with his baby in a stroller (and checking to see that it was swaddled against the wind). His mouth, which normally is loud and foul, has been clamped shut.
He was supposed to give a news conference at 10am on Tuesday, but he cancelled it with neither warning nor explanation. He rescheduled it for 2pm, but did not talk then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], either. Instead, he walked around, carrying a roll of fat around his middle (the big, thick neck is gone. He will miss it if Lewis catches him on the chin). As well as Fenech, Tyson has a motley crew of "professional motivators" that follow him around. These are all men,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all black, all bejewelled and all shouting, all the time.
They wear camouflage clothes (T-shirt, matching shorts, matching cap, high-top sneakers) and they carry little boys who look just like them (and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when nobody is looking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they drop the hard-arse act,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], go up to women and ask them where the toilets are, coz the little one's gotta go, y'know?).
Tyson jabbed at a bag and shook hands with a few fans, and let people with towels mop him down, and then he disappeared.
A news conference was held in his absence. Several journalists asked what drugs Tyson was taking and, if the answer was none, then when did he stop taking them? These were serious questions, since Tyson reportedly manages his rage with pharmaceuticals, but all were answered with ballyhoo.
"He's gonna kill Lennox Lewis. He's a machine. He's been winding up, gonna let him go. Ain't nobody can beat Mike Tyson" and such like (after this last one, a wag yelled out: "What about Evander Holyfield?", but this, too, was ignored).
Asked why Tyson would not speak to the media, his team said: "You guys irritate him."
All the while, Fenech stood in the wings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], looking utterly unlike the Marrickville Mauler.
These days, he is a multi-millionaire and boxing sage, sought-after worldwide for his calm influence and advice, and about to be inducted into boxing's International Hall of Fame.
"He looks good," Fenech said of Tyson, who was jabbing madly at a bag in 40-degree heat at a casino in the heart of the Mississippi delta, where racoons can be seen on the roadside, and where the main businesses (besides casinos,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and because of them) are pawn shops and 24-hour child care centres.
The fight will be held at the Pyramid (go on, guess what it looks like) on the Mississippi River. The venue holds 20,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 people and tickets have not sold as well as organisers hoped.
The highway out to the Tyson hotel in Tunica, Mississippi, is lined with signs saying: "Fight Tickets, Fight Tickets, Fight Tickets." The best seats cost $US2400. It costs $US54 to watch the fight on pay-per-view.
