The aging Castro finally handed the reins of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the Presidential control over to his 76 year old brother, Raul Castro, six months ago. This was after a 49 year [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] rule which left the nation of Cuba deprived of democratic elections. Raul has 77 year old Jose Ramon as his Deputy and 72 year old Gen. Julio Casas as his Defense Minister.
"In democratic countries Presidents don't matter. Dictators, with their insatiable appetite for glory, on the other hand appear to exert [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] substantial influence on the economic fortunes of their countries. There are after all, so few checks on the power of an autocrat," said Steve Levitt.
Dictators assume sole power as authoritarian rulers over the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] state. Julius Caesar became dictator of Rome for life. Dictators of modern times, include Peron [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] of Argentina, Franco of Spain, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Pilsudski of Poland, Stalin of USSR, Hitler of Germany, Salazar of Portugal, Diaz of Mexico, Mussolini of Italy, and Trajillo of the Dominican Republic, Noriega of Panama and Castro [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Cuba.
Most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, in the late 1950's and everyone thought they were right. All Cubans were receptive when a young charismatic leader came along. That [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is in spite of the fact that it took a revolution to put him in power.
The young man eloquently and passionately denounced the old system and the press instantly fell in love. No one bothered to ask who his friends were, or what he really believed in. Impoverished farmers believed the new leader when he said he would assist them and give them free medical care [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and education for everyone. The crowds cheered when he said he would bring justice and equality. When the new leader said "I am for change and I'll bring you change," the people yelled, "Viva Fidel." A new Messiah had come to save them.
When the executioner's guns were finally silenced, the people's guns had been confiscated. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry and oppressed. By the time the press took notice of what was happening, it was too late. They owed their employment to their new leader. By the time everyone received free education, it was valueless. By the time change was finally implemented, Cuba had been given a Third-World status. By the time the change was over, more than a million people had fled Cuba in rafts, boats and inner tubes. The fortunate ones managed to make it ashore in other countries. Fidel's illegitimate daughter, who also escaped from Cuba, became one of the strongest opponents to Castro's hard-handed politics.
Cuba claimed to be a communist regime, yet the working classes in Cuba were paralyzed after Castro formed a new bureaucracy. It is said that they need to unite to fight the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] ruling class, who reap the rewards from their island home.
Cubans are now asking if there will be a new round of changes, or is the aged leadership merely going to follow what Fidel set up? A lot of Cubans feel they should have the right to meet whom they please, to come and go from their nation as they see fit and to the right of freedom of speech. Instead they are nothing more than captives, whose liberty has been crushed [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] as if it was valueless.
