The Maines family knew early on that their son Wyatt was different. He favored Barbie over Spiderman, sequins and heels over jeans and sneakers. His twin brother, Jonas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], helped his parents accept the differences in the twins. He told his father,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Dad,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you might as well face it. You have a son and a daughter."
The Boston Globe reports the inspiring story of a family coming to terms with what it means for their child to be transgender. They've faced countless struggles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both in accepting their son as a daughter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in the discrimination they've suffered in their community,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at times at the hands of people they had counted as friends.
They made the choice to embrace Wyatt as he became Nicole,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], offering their son the support and love he needed to finally become herself.
To aid in the transition for the whole family, they are thankful to have found The Children's Hospital Gender Management Services Clinic. Founder and endocrinologist Norman Spack says the community he serves suffers from the highest rate of suicide attempts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which can result from familial rejection.

The clinic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which includes geneticists, social workers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], psychiatrists,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], psychologists,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and nurses, has so far treated 95 patients for disorders that range from babies born with ambiguous genitalia to cases where normal sexual development does not occur.
About a third of the patients have undergone puberty suppression.
Spack recommends the medical treatment of transgender youth before the onset of puberty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Receiving treatment can make a major difference in quality of life for a transgender person. He says that blocking the onset of puberty is a reversible treatment with "no ill consequences."
Once a transgender person begins to take hormones of the opposite gender,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], permanent changes take hold in the body that cannot be reversed via hormone treatment. The final step is gender reassignment surgery, which can performed at the age of 18.相关的主题文章：
