Bringing stars to life in wax,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
WHEN NBA star Yao Ming got married last year, Madame Tussauds came up with a wax figure of the Chinese sporting hero. The 2.29m-tall lookalike, clad in a tuxedo and giant basketball shoes with a bouquet in hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], drew throngs of visitors to the ground floor entrance of the wax museum in downtown Shanghai.
It was the museum's way of celebrating Yao's wedding that caught so much media attention at that time. However, that's not the only Yao figure the museum has; it has another sporting a Rockets jersey inside.
Other Chinese sporting icons such as Diving Queen Guo Jingjing and ex-Olympics 110m hurdles winner Liu Xiang all have their figures enshrined in the museum. These are what Madame Tussauds visitors want to see in China.
Golden man: Beckham is among the attractions at the museum.
"We never make wax figures without asking our customers first," Madame Tussauds Shanghai general manager Edward Fuller said. Fuller has moved back to the London headquarters now.
"Our market research told us that we needed to have 60% local Asian stars at Madame Tussauds in Shanghai,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which we had done, while another 40% of the customers told us that they wanted to see Western stars.
"As a result of the research, the museum has Hong Kong artistes like Twins, Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Leslie Cheung,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cecilia Cheung and Kelly Chan as well as Chinese movie directors Feng Xiaogang and Zhang Yimou.
Memories: The late Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng is enshrined at Madame Tussauds Shanghai,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"In the Western celebrities section, there are Brad Pitt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, Charlie Chaplin and David Beckham. Of all the personalities, Audrey Hepburn is the most popular among the Chinese visitors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], followed by Andy Lau and Beckham.
"Hepburn was probably one of the names that really surprised me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Fuller said.
He said when seeking feedback from focus groups comprising young people on which celebrities they wanted to see most, Hepburn came as a surprise choice.
"It's a fabulously-made figure and has become one of our most popular wax figures," Fuller said.
Each wax figure costs hundreds of thousands of ringgit and can take between three and six months to make,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The likeness of the figure is incredible; even human hair was used for producing the high quality wax models.
Big draw: The vivacious wax model of the late Hepburn is the most popular figure.
During my visit there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I couldn't help but snap away with two of my favourite figures - the late Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng and Liu Xiang.
From eyelashes and facial expressions to the realistic hair, Teng's figure was almost perfect. Besides rubbing shoulders and striking poses with the wax figures, visitors can also engage in interactive games such as singing along with Canto pop star Joey Yung and putting alongside Tiger Woods.
Touch the wax models if you like. No one will stop you as the sculptures are built for durability,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"We don't have red ropes stopping people from touching the figures. We encourage it and want people to have their pictures taken with the stars because we know people thoroughly enjoy it," Fuller said.
However, a team of talented workers comes in every morning to maintain the wax models and ensure they are in good condition before the museum opens its doors to visitors.
Madame Tussauds' studios in London,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Britain, make and supply figures to its museums around the world including the Shanghai museum. Although each figure-making process varies, the fundamentals of the process have not changed since Madame Tussauds was founded over 200 years ago in London.
The process is rather complicated: Firstly, arrangements are made with the personality or his management team for a sitting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when measurements of the person are taken. The person's right profile will then be recorded during a posed photo shoot.

After that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the production process includes modelling the figure in clay, moulding and hair, teeth and eye insertion as well as colouring of the final product. Did you know that every single hair is individually inserted into the head?
"The costumes are usually donated by the celebrities. In fact, some of the celebrities whom we have great relationships with continue to donate costumes as they go along. It's great fun,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Fuller said.
He said the long-term relationship with the celebrity was very important.
"We introduce Madame Tussauds to them, talk them through the process and ensure that the celebrity is happy with the finished result," he said.
Madame Tussauds Shanghai has been open since June 2006. It is located on the 10th floor of the New World Building at West Nanjing Road. Adult and child tickets are priced at 135 yuan (RM69.23) and 100 yuan (RM51.2 respectively.
