Recognition for lab wizard
Over 10 years he secured funding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], purchased equipment and established the Flinders Proteomics Facility the first of its kind in the state which is available to scientists from other research organisations including universities, hospitals and CSIRO.
The "champion of protein analysis" was named Unsung Hero of South Australian Science at the state launch of National Science Week.
The judges were looking for someone actively involved in SA science over the long term,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who had not yet received significant recognition for their contribution.
But Dr Chataway said he didn't need formal recognition and expected most scientists would feel the same way.
"Unsung is probably the key word," he said. "We're in this job because we like it. We really enjoy it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we enjoy the unknown, working out puzzles, solving problems and helping other people."
Dr Chataway has contributed to a range of projects, from ophthalmology to cancer research and neuroscience to plant diseases, and trained many young researchers.
His current area of interest is the strange clumps of proteins that form in the brains of people with Parkinson's disease.
Flinders University Professor Simon Brookes says Dr Chataway is a "techniques wizard" who is unassuming and generous with his time.
"He is motivated by the satisfaction of making things work, rather than seeking the limelight for himself," Professor Brookes said.
Awards were also presented to joint winners of the Unsung Hero of South Australian Science Communication,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Science and mathematics teacher Tatiana Anesbury is an exceptional volunteer who works to give students the best possible educational experiences and opportunities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. She also mentors early career teachers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Flinders University Associate Professor Stewart Walker is renowned for the annual Chemical Murder Mystery program for Year 10 students. This year he also prepared an adult murder mystery at RiAus.
