Hoboken middle schoolers urge residents to recyle

Tige Anderson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 12,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Owen Possick, 11,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sixth graders from Mustard Seed School in Hoboken, present their Nike Reuse-A-Shoe drive to the City Council. Shoes will be collected at City Hall, 94 Washington Street in Hoboken.
"Recently we learned that over 300 million pairs of shoes are thrown in the trash each year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Tige Anderson, 12,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a student at Mustard Seed School. "Feeling this was very wasteful, we decided to do something about it."
Anderson and his classmate Owen Possick, 11,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are teaming up for Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe drive, collecting worn out athletic shoes that can be recycled and used to make running tracks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], playgrounds and playing fields.
The shoes are ground up and turned into a material called "Nike grind" that's used for sports-friendly surfaces.
Rather than ending up in a landfill, old sneakers will become new places to play.
With the help of their school, Anderson and Possick are hoping to collect over 500 sneakers.
Drop off your old kicks through February 16 at Hoboken City Hall, 94 Washington St., or at Mustard Seed School,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 422 Willow Ave. (Athletic shoes only - no metal, cleats, dress shoes, or sandals.) Those interested in donating can also call (201) 668-2989 for pickup.
