Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
This group is for parents and those who have and love someone on the Spectrum. Pervasive Development Disorders (PDDs), which includes Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Rett's Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and PDD-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). Jack needed new shoes THAT in itself was a nightmare. He's got sensory issues with wearing shoes - so unless HE picks them out AND is 100% happy with them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], getting them on his feet every day is TORTURE!!!!
ALL he wanted was the Skechers Hot Lights, but I didn't want to spend $50. Someone suggested Famous Footwear as having Skechers at good prices. We drove over an HOUR to get to this store. After a 2 hour long MELTDOWN in the store last Friday (the 8th) - they didn't have the ones he wanted in the store. DH refused to go to another store. This store offers free home delivery via FedEx. They will order them and ship them to you. Ok, after 2 hours of fighting with Jack, we ordered and payed for the shoes and we were told we would have them in 7-10 business days. Great!
I check the tracking # and find out the delivery date is "off". I call FedEx and find out the store uses "SmartPost" which means that FedEx ships them, then hands them off to the post office to deliver them. Uh-oh - problem. Where we live, we don't get street delivery of mail - there's NO mailmen here. Anyway,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when I gave the store the address, I gave them my STREET address, not my MAILING address. There's NOTHING FedEx can do. I call the post office. There's nothing the PO can do. They will not accept FedEx packages AND with no PO Box listed - they can not give them to me even if they did accept them. Grrrr. I get on the phone with Famous Footwear (the store that ordered them). The store manager has NEVER heard of FedEx. What? Where the fuck are you from that you've NEVER heard of FedEx?????? More Grrrr. 3) Are you ready???? I can order a 2nd pair of shoes over the phone with them (for 25% off). They will ship them via UPS overnight. Once the warehouse gets the 1st pair back - they will send us a check. NONE of these options help me. (I don't have the money for a 2nd pair and Jack can't wait another 2 weeks for new shoes). Customer service calls me back last Friday night (a week after we ordered them) - asking what I wanted to do. I tell them we'll talk about it on Monday (today) after I deal with the Post office.
I go to the Post office this morning. I take Jack (who was woken up early and was in a particularly destructive and nasty mood) in there kicking and screaming with no shoes on his feet. I beg and plead with the post office to give me the shoes. After they saw Jack AND I just broke down and cried - they gave me the box under the condition that they would NEVER do this again. I open the box and Jack is ECSTATIC,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He LOVES them and sits down on the floor - to put them on. The store ordered and shipped a size 1-boys. Aaaaahhhhhhhhhh. Jack had his first meltdown of the day today when the shoes didn't fit.
I call customer service back. Long story short.(I was on the phone for almost an HOUR with customer service). They do NOT carry them in Jack's size (the store made a BIG mistake). There is nothing the store/customer service can do to get me the shoes. Our options are 1) ship them back (at my expense) and wait for a refund check or 2) take them back to the store (1 hour drive each way) and get the money back - THEN go to another store.
I just called the Skechers STORE and they have 2 kinds of Hot Lights in Jack's size in stock - but NOT the ones he wants. NO ONE has the ones he wants in his size. Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he's going to have to pick from the 2 that they DO have. So, I'm preparing myself for ANOTHER meltdown in the store tonight. After DH gets out of work, we have to drive an hour to the store,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], return the shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], go to another store (about 5 minutes away), fight with Jack over new,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], new shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then drive an hour home to first have dinner (no money to eat out and no time to come home an eat first). Plus, the Skechers store is about $15 more expensive then Famous Footwear - so I've got to spend MORE moeny that I don't have - Hence why I didn't go there in the first place.
Oh, but Famous Footwear is sending us a $10 gift card to make it "all better".
Ricky always hates new shoes and until this year would not pick them out so we always ended up just getting something and then begging, pleading and pushing until he got used to them. Then once he has worn them a few times he is generally fine with them. He will also generally wear dress shoes without too much of a fuss because he knows that we only have him wear them when they aren't really optional (like with his Easter outfit or Christmas stuff) His biggest issue is going from sandels to sneakers. He generally loves sandels and will make the switch in the spring pretty easily but in the fall it takes some talking to get him to switch back. He does have a pair of sketchers that he loves (light up ones) and one pair of brown dressier sketchers he will wear. We haven't tried the black dress shoes yet, but he did decline the white and black sneakers that we got for semi dressy (church) occasions. If I force the issue and threaten to ground the iPod then he will put them on. Once he has them on, he is fine with them. Oh, yes, he will also cave pretty easily if I promise that he just has to wear them to x place and can take them off as soon as he gets home.
What an absolute nightmare,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I'd never buy from them again! I'd be crying too.
We just did the shoe shopping thing 4 days ago. The only shoe he wanted was the iron man shoes and of course they didn't have him in his size. To calm him I bought the next size up and assured him he'd grow into them. then spotted these great shoes that were high tops on sale for $25. They help with the toe walking. He of course didn't want them. Why? Because MIL found these cowboy style light up toy story boots. They barely fit him. He's a size 11 and they are 10's. But she hyped them all up and he HAD to have them (as long as he could have the ironman shoes too). I was ticked and stated "well, nana found them for you so she will buy them for you". She wasn't happy, but did. So I bought the high tops and the iron man sneakers. Kind of perfect though because the iron man sneakers are size 12. He can wear the hightop sneakers/boots (actually they are probably considered more a boot) for the winter and then by March/April he may be into the iron man sneakers. for the toystory boots, (and he doesn't give a care about toy story),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he has worn them once so far.
Greta - those are the exact ones that Jack picked out. That's what he wanted. Well, he originally wanted the police ones (They have a red/blue light-up bar across the top strap). Those were discontinued. Then he picked out these.
Sonya - Jack saw those Toy Story Boots. He's a HUGE Buzz Lightyear fan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I told him he HAD to have SNEAKERS - not boots. He also saw those hi-tops/boots. Lightning McQueen/Cars ones. They are more like boots. He fell in love with them. He LOVES Lightning McQueen too (His current shoes are Cars). He put on those boots/hi-tops and cried. He HATED the way they felt - but then he cried when I took them off because he loved the way they looked. DH goes into the store to return them. He's a much better "people person" than I am. Anyway,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], DH comes out all upset. Apparently, this "genius" 16-yo cashier wanted to credit DH's "plastic" instead of giving him back cash. DH had used a debit card - not credit, but to this kid "a plastic purchase - gets a plastic credit. Paper purchase gets a paper credit" Back to customer service we go. I went in the store with DS kicking and screaming. He remembered the place and did NOT want to be there. I threw a fit until the girl called their customer service. I spent an HOUR on the phone with customer service (20 minutes on hold for a supervisor, 20 minutes waiting for the supervisor to read the history on our account, and another 20 minutes discussing the situation and how unhappy I was). I had to walk out of the store defeated. I won the battle, but lost the war kind of feeling. Only good thing is DH called this girl on lying to him while she had her manager on the phone - but I doubt that's going to do anything. She wasn't the one I was mad at specifically. I was upset with the company in general and believe me I said what I needed to say - but it didn't give me any satisfaction. We go in, and grab the 2 paris they have in Jack's size. Put on one of each and Jack runs around for about 2-3 minutes before he makes a decision. He was as happy as could be - no whining, crying, or meltdown of any kind. He was SOOOOO excited with the pair he chose and ran around the store in his new shoes (not appropriate and I usually stop him - but he didn't pull down boxes, throw shoes, scream, throw himself on the floor, or try to escape from the store - I was just happy to see him so excited so I let him do it). He ran around watching his shoes light up and telling EVERYONE in the store ALL ABOUT his new shoes. People actually thought it was just too cute to see him so excited over the lights. So anyway, I tell the cashier that I got a 15% off coupon in my email - but it wasn't printable - but it said I could use it in-store. (THANKS Amber!!!!). She said she had to physically have it to give us the discount. Oh here we go again I thought. Nope,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I pulled up my email on DH's Droid and showed it to her. Less than 5 minutes later we walked out of the store all done and happy. She gave it to us Smile
DH originally didn't want to go to the Skechers store because he didn't want to pay full price (about $50). I got them at Famous Footwear for $42 plus we got 15% off (Total $41 change with tax and a massive migraine). Well, at the Skechers Store, they were on sale for $39 plus we got 15% off. It came to $36 and change with tax Smile On top of that we have to wait 48-72 hours to get the amount credited to DH's account which leaves DH with $18 in his checking account until then. I guess DH learned his lesson!
These are Jack's new shoes:
Good to know that we're not the only ones who have a hard time with shoes. It seems like all our kids don't do so well with new shoes. He "clapped" his feet together and kicked the back of the seat the ENTIRE ride home to watch them light-up. He showed Nana Papa over and over. He's still wearing them now, and I'm pretty sure he's sleeping in them - no way in hell I'm taking them off his feet to hear him scream NOW.
