'Bottle trees' shoot up within the desert,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
I know there is the expression: One man's trash is another man's treasure. I am not too sure about it, myself, but it certainly summarizes the work of Elmer Long out in the desert near Oro Grande.

Traveling up from Victorville, it's a harsh landscape with railway tracks and a huge cement works, but farther north it eases and Long's place is a sparkling spot on the horizon because it reflects the desert sun.
Long is engaged on a work of big proportions but is satisfied to stop and explain what he is doing to passers-by.

"I've lived out here twice in my life," he reflected. He's a little shaky on the exact dates, though. "But I returned within the first '70s. I was camping in my van, and wanted a place to stay. Not the small fancy things you usually associate with that art, but hammers on hubcaps or bones on steel. All very varied and interesting.

"I'd get all kinds of problems then," he said. "No, people may come and go as they wish. While they're here, they're my guests. As long as they close the gate after they leave."
